Iran and Israel Exchange Strikes, Ceasefire Collapses

The fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel fell apart on Sunday and Monday in the most serious escalation since Washington and Tehran agreed to halt fighting in early April. By Monday morning, Israel had launched airstrikes on central and western Iran, Iran had fired three waves of missiles at Israel, Yemen’s Houthi rebels had launched a separate missile at Israeli territory, and air raid sirens were sounding near a US military base in Saudi Arabia. President Trump posted on social media demanding both sides stop shooting, and both sides eventually signaled a pause, but the two-month-old ceasefire had been effectively broken for the second time.

The sequence of events began on Sunday, June 7. Hezbollah fired missiles at Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. Israel responded by striking Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh, hitting a building in the Hezbollah-dominated area of the city despite a US request earlier in the week to stand down. Trump was briefed on the missile attacks by the White House, and told Fox News on Sunday that Iran’s strikes were “certainly not going to help negotiations.” He contacted Netanyahu directly to urge restraint and asked Israel not to retaliate. Israel retaliated anyway.

In the early hours of Monday June 8, dozens of Israeli warplanes struck military targets in central and western Iran. Workers at the plant were evacuated. Iran’s airports, including Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, were shut down. Explosions were reported in Tehran, Isfahan, and Tabriz. Iran’s military described the Israeli strikes as crossing “all red lines.”

Iran then fired additional missiles into Israel. Sirens activated in Tel Aviv and southern Israeli cities, including near Dimona, which houses Israel’s main nuclear research facility, and the city of Arad. Israeli emergency services said there were no immediate reports of injuries. Iranian missiles were intercepted or landed in open areas. Late on Monday morning, Iran announced it was halting further attacks, saying Israel had “learned a lesson,” while maintaining its threat of broader retaliation if strikes continued.

The Houthi movement in Yemen launched a separate missile at Israel on Monday, the first such attack from Yemen since the April 8 ceasefire. Air warning sirens also sounded in an area of Saudi Arabia near a US air base, though Saudi authorities said the danger passed.

A US defense official confirmed American forces took no part in the Israeli strikes on Iran and described Israel’s operation as “relatively limited.” Trump then posted again: “Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE! Final negotiations on ‘Peace’ are proceeding.”

The resumed fighting threatens ongoing US-Iran diplomatic talks aimed at extending the ceasefire and eventually reaching a longer-term nuclear agreement. Iran has consistently maintained that any lasting deal must include a halt to Israeli operations in Lebanon, a condition the United States has not endorsed and Israel has rejected. This week’s exchange of fire is the direct product of that unresolved contradiction.

In Lebanon, where the fighting has continued without pause since March despite a separate April 16 Israel-Lebanon agreement, Lebanese authorities released updated figures on Sunday. The week ended as it began: with a ceasefire that nobody would enforce, a deal that nobody would sign, a pope who demanded that artificial intelligence be disarmed while the men with real weapons were counting uranium kilograms in hotel rooms in Muscat. On Saturday evening in Budapest a penalty shootout decided the Champions League. On Saturday morning in the Pacific a SOUTHCOM press release described the fourth US military strike on small boats that week, putting the total death toll since September at 205. These events were treated, in the official language, as belonging to entirely separate categories of the world’s business. They do not.

Iran: The Ceasefire That Both Sides Kept Violating

The week’s core story was also its most structurally dishonest. On Monday May 25, US Central Command announced “self-defense strikes” targeting Iranian missile launch sites and naval boats around the Strait of Hormuz. The context: a ceasefire, formally in effect since April, with ongoing negotiations for a permanent deal. Iran’s foreign ministry responded that the United States had committed “numerous maritime robberies” against Iranian commercial ships and had flagrantly violated the ceasefire in the Hormozgan region over the prior 28 hours. Each side was describing the other’s military operations as the violation that justified its own.

The escalation through the week had its own rhythm. On Tuesday, CENTCOM announced it had destroyed Iranian “radar and drone command and control sites” in Goruk and Qeshm Island, in response to Iranian actions including the shootdown of a US MQ-1 drone operating in international airspace. On Wednesday, Trump convened a Cabinet meeting that produced no announcement. On Thursday, May 28, NBC News reported that American and Iranian negotiators had agreed to the outline of a deal, covering language to lift constraints on Hormuz navigation, lift the US blockade on Iranian ports, and begin new nuclear talks. Trump reviewed the text. He declined to sign it, seeking tougher language on Iran’s nuclear commitments.

Also on Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent threatened Oman directly, warning that Washington would “aggressively target any actors involved in facilitating tolls for the Strait.” Trump went further, telling reporters he would “blow up” Oman if it moved to control the waterway with Iran. These statements were made during a ceasefire, directed at the same country serving as a diplomatic host for the negotiations. A floating object thought to be a naval mine was sighted in the Strait on May 29 by Omani authorities. No group claimed it.

On Friday, Trump held a White House Situation Room meeting and said he would make a “final determination.” The session lasted two hours and produced no decision. By Saturday, Hegseth told an international defence forum in Singapore that the US military is ready to resume full combat operations in the Gulf and is “more strongly placed to do so than on day one.” The week closed with the deal outlined, not signed; the ceasefire violated daily by both sides; and a region continuing to absorb the consequences.

Lebanon deteriorated in parallel. On May 31, Netanyahu ordered the IDF to expand its ground operations in southern Lebanon following the seizure of Beaufort Castle, the 900-year-old crusader fortress that commands the high ground over both southern Lebanon and northern Israel. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the advance was made “at the direction” of Netanyahu. The IDF re-issued evacuation orders for thirteen villages south of the Zahrani River. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam accused Israel of a “scorched-earth policy.” Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called the advance “cause for serious concern.” Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed on May 31 that message exchanges with the US were continuing, but that “nothing is certain until a deal is finalised.” His government has insisted throughout that Lebanon must be covered by any agreement. Netanyahu’s government has insisted throughout that it will not accept that condition. The civilian population of southern Lebanon has no representative in either position.

The core nuclear arithmetic has not changed. Iran holds 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity, a short technical step from the 90 percent weapons-grade threshold. Trump has said he would not be comfortable with either Russia or China taking Iran’s enriched uranium, eliminating the two countries most likely to serve as an acceptable third-party recipient from Tehran’s perspective. Every week the deal is not signed is another week in which that stockpile, and its disposal, remains unresolved.

Quetta: 24 Dead on the Shuttle Train

The shuttle train was carrying military personnel between stations in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, when the bomb detonated on Sunday, May 24. The engine and three coaches derailed. At least 24 people were killed, including army servicemen. More than 50 were wounded. Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi confirmed the sequence from the wreckage: the blast derailed the engine first, then the coaches came down around it. Paramilitary soldiers and volunteers pulled victims from overturned carriages on the track. The Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility before the day was out.

This is not a new organization. The BLA claimed the November 2024 bombing at Quetta railway station that killed 32. It claimed the September 2025 car bomb at the Federal Constabulary headquarters that killed 16. The operational logic across all three attacks is consistent: hit the symbols and personnel of the Pakistani state’s integration project in a province whose natural resources finance the national economy and whose land corridor carries CPEC, and do it through personnel targets rather than symbolic ones. The BLA is designated a foreign terrorist organization by the United States. Its stated base is in Afghanistan. Its stated objective is independence for an ethnic Baloch population that has never accepted absorption into the Pakistani federal structure as legitimate.

Pakistan’s military frames the insurgency as externally sponsored, Indian-proxied, funded through Afghan territory that Islamabad has been publicly and acrimoniously pressuring Kabul to clear. There is documentation for external facilitation. There is also a seventy-year record of Baloch political grievances, resource extraction without revenue return, enforced disappearances of activists, and a Pakistani state presence in the province that has functioned more as an occupation than a federation. Both things are true simultaneously. Islamabad treats the second as a foreign propaganda operation. The funerals in Quetta happen either way.

The timing carries its own weight. On May 23, the same day Asim Munir was in Tehran meeting President Pezeshkian as the primary mediator between Washington and the Islamic Republic, the organization that most consistently kills Pakistani soldiers was planning Sunday’s attack. The photograph released by the Iranian Presidency shows Munir seated with Pezeshkian, a picture of diplomatic consequence. Twenty-four hours later, his soldiers were being pulled from the wreckage of a train in his country’s most restive province.

Pakistan cannot simultaneously stabilize Balochistan, manage the Afghan frontier, hold together an economy under IMF structural adjustment, and conduct nuclear-adjacent diplomacy between two states that three months ago were at war with each other. It is attempting all of it. The question of which one gives way first is not rhetorical.

What the cable documents is a luncheon meeting between Asad Majeed Khan and Donald Lu, then the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs. What Lu told the ambassador that afternoon was transmitted back to Islamabad as a classified diplomatic report. What followed, within weeks, was the no-confidence vote that removed Prime Minister Imran Khan from power in April 2022.

The Drop Site investigation, written by Waqas Ahmed, Murtaza Hussain, and Ryan Grim and based on leaked documents alongside interviews with former civilian and military officials, does not confine itself to the cipher alone. It traces the entire arc of the US-Pakistan relationship across five years: from the CIA director William J. Burns flying to Islamabad in June 2021 and waiting a full day before being told by phone that Khan would not see him, to the Field Marshal Asim Munir now described by Donald Trump as “my favorite Field Marshal.” The distance between those two points is the story.

Burns had come to Pakistan seeking territory for US drone bases to be used against targets in Afghanistan after the planned American withdrawal. He left with neither the bases nor the meeting. Khan had already told Axios co-founder Jonathan Swan, in plain language: “Absolutely not. There is no way we are going to allow any bases, any sort of action from Pakistani territory into Afghanistan.” Kabul fell to the Taliban weeks later. The US evacuation became a political catastrophe for the Biden administration. The rupture between Washington and Islamabad hardened.

What the cipher documents, in the reconstruction offered by Drop Site, is the next phase of that rupture. By early 2022, US officials had communicated to Pakistani interlocutors that “all would be forgiven” if Khan were removed. The cable records the specifics of that communication in classified diplomatic language. Drop Site released the document so that, in their words, “it becomes part of the public historical record.”

The political consequences inside Pakistan were immediate. Supporters of Khan, still imprisoned following multiple convictions that his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party describes as politically motivated, called the publication a vindication. What cannot be disputed by anyone reading the subsequent record is what followed Khan’s removal: under the military-backed government that replaced him, Islamabad reversed course on nearly every position Khan had held. Pakistan became a quiet supplier of artillery to Ukraine. It signed a mutual defence pact with Saudi Arabia that Khan had refused. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor’s second phase stalled. Washington got everything it had wanted and could not extract while Khan governed.

Drop Site’s companion investigation includes a disclosure that Trump privately urged Asim Munir to “resolve” Khan’s detention during discussions last year. It also documents the irony embedded in the present moment: the same generals who engineered Khan’s removal to repair ties with Washington are now basking in international praise for mediating between the US and Iran, a role that required precisely the kind of independent regional positioning Khan was removed for attempting.

Drop Site also published an important caveat about the cipher’s provenance. The redactions next to the addressee list, as the outlet noted in a separate post, point both to the source of the leak and to who was not its source: the copy released by Drop Site did not originate from the prime minister’s office. The question of where it came from, and who held it for four years, is one the investigation has not yet fully answered.

The cipher’s release arrived on the same day that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the Sunday Times that the country’s role as mediator in the US-Iran war is “one of the shining moments in our history.” Former Pakistani ambassador to the United States Masood Khan told the same paper: “I’ve had a long diplomatic career and I have never seen Pakistan on such a high pedestal.” The collision of those two narratives, the diplomatic triumph and the documentary exposure of the mechanism that produced it, defined the week more precisely than any other single development.

The US Navy maintains a cordon around Iranian ports. Iran continues to strangle traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the 21-mile passage through which, before February 28, roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas moved each day. Since the US launched its “Project Freedom” convoy operation to guide stranded vessels through the strait, exactly two commercial ships have successfully transited under American naval protection. Major shipping lines have declined to send vessels through a corridor sitting within range of Iranian missiles, drones, and mines whose precise locations Iran has admitted, in one extraordinary moment of operational honesty, it can no longer fully track. Trump paused Project Freedom on May 6, the same day Rubio declared the war concluded, then posted on social media that bombing would resume “at a much higher level and intensity” if Iran did not accept terms. The press conference and the social media post arrived within hours of each other, each addressed to a different audience.
