The United States and Israel launched a massive joint air and missile campaign against Iran on February 28, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a decapitation strike on his Tehran compound and plunging the region into open war, as Iran fired missiles and drones across the Middle East and the first US combat deaths were confirmed.
